Rev. Adriene Thorne, Pastor
My call to ministry flows from encounters with God that stretch back to my earliest childhood memories. Spirit has been dancing in and through the choreography of my life from the beginning of time, and I am grateful to have joined the Holy Spirit dance at First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn.
I received my undergraduate degree from The State University of New York — Empire State College, concentrating in the field of Cultural Studies with a Creative Writing focus. I earned my Master of Divinity degree in Art, Religion, and Psychology from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif., where I was awarded the school's highest honor. I completed post-graduate studies in pastoral care and counseling at The Blanton-Peale Institute, and I am certified as a life coach and disaster chaplain. My background in the performing arts includes performance credits with The Dance Theatre of Harlem, The Metropolitan Opera, and the world famous Radio City Rockettes among others.
Marianne Williamson said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.” I am at First Church Brooklyn to remind the community of faith of our call to be powerful beyond measure and to do great things through the one whose grace is ours. At First Church Brooklyn, we turn our power towards telling God’s love story and transforming the world. In the midst of strife and turmoil close to home and around the world, we are practicing the good news of the gospel that meets the world’s fear with lavish love. It is pure grace for me to journey with First Church Brooklyn for such a time as this.
