Upcoming Worship

This Sunday

On May 28th,  Rev. Thorne will deliver the sermon "One" based on Acts 1:6-14 and John 17:1-10. Click  here to view the bulletin.

Children’s Education

Sunday School follows the academic calendar through mid-June. Childcare will be provided for very young children throughout the summer.

Adult Education

The Men’s Fellowship meets for breakfast every Wednesday morning at 7:30am at the Plaza Diner. The men are currently reading and discussing J.D.Vance's book Hillbilly Elegy.  All men are welcome to join the discussion!

Serving Others

The Food Pantry continues to provide groceries to families who are in need. This week, 20 volunteers helped 86 patrons.

Worship services are streamed live over the Internet. If you find yourself out of town or at home under the weather, you need not miss a minute of the excitement around First Presbyterian Church! Tune in to worship through our website and listen to the music, the sermon, and all the rest of the sounds of worship (sorry, no video). We will provide the worship bulletin in PDF format so that you can follow along. No matter where you are in the world, we will be there, too! But be sure to tune in around 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time, because this is Live! From New York!

Social

Check out the weekly e-newsletter and Church calendar for the latest schedule of activities.

Governance

Session meets monthly, normally on the 3rd Monday, except for July and August.

Thanks!

In previous years, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving we have written thank-you notes to honor the many people and things for which we are grateful. Reading them is thought-provoking and uplifting!

Read the thanks that people wrote in 2013.

Sunday 10:00 AM
Our 10:00 AM discussions will center around our perceptions of the afterlife and how these beliefs are formulated and shaped through our exposure to Scripture, the world of art, literature, and personal witness. Perhaps our interior sense of the afterlife stands at odds with everything to which we have been exposed. Perhaps we are deeply conflicted about accepted perceptions of "heaven" or "paradise." Our conversations will grow out of Easter and the many "Holy Ghost stories" that attended this singular event, including the story of the Road to Emmaus, along with the many other manifestations of Jesus, following the Crucifixion. Is it therefore inappropriate to suggest that the Resurrection is also a story about grief, trauma, and a pathway to acceptance? What are our personal experiences with the afterlife? And what does that word mean to us? Join Elder Erik Brogger (who is just as confused about all this as you may be) in the Thurman Library on Sunday mornings for this lay discussion of text and self.

We welcome children grades K-7th every Sunday following passing of the peace. Children’s Choir music will find it’s home in our Sunday School hour. This year our weekly adventures through the Bible will use the Deep Blue Kids curriculum (7th graders are encouraged to try out both Sunday School and The Parables Project to choose the program that fits them best!)

After the huge success of the Parables Project, we're incorporating a regular program for the 7th-12th Graders of FPC! "Submerge" is the curriculum for 7th-12th graders produced by Deep Blue Kids. This new offering is picking up from where the Parables Project left off. Led by Ashley Thaxton and Robert Stevenson, they will be meeting every Sunday following the passing of the peace during the regular Sunday School hour.

Music is an important element of the worship experience at First Presbyterian Church. A variety of musical styles is part of each service, with jazz, pop Christian, African American spirituals, classical, and old-time hymn-singing all having a place.
